Itinerary
Day 1
Arrival in Sri Lanka - Kalutara
Your guide will welcome you in the arrivals hall at Colombo International Airport and help you to your vehicle. We then head to Kalutara to check into your hotel. (Normal check-in time is 14:00). Dinner and hotel accommodation in Kalutara.
Day 2
Kalutara / Galle / Weligama / Yala o Kataragama
After breakfast, we head to Galle. Galle, the epic capital of the south, where classic Dutch architecture meets the tropical environment, creating a vivid atmosphere of beauty. Stroll through the cobbled streets listening to the creaking wooden doors of the halls and see how European architecture blends with the South Asian traditions that today inundate culture enthusiasts all over the world. Its original bastions, preserved to this day, are proof of a heritage preserved for more than three and a half centuries. Walk clockwise inside the fort to see the "old gate" with the British coat of arms, then the Zwart Bastion, the oldest of them all, and the lighthouse that stands 18 feet high next to the Point Utretcht Bastion. This Dutch happiness is painted with streets that stretch out in a rectangular grid crossed by houses with Dutch colonial-style balconies. However, its mark is a reality in which the Dutch fort remains a working community with its usual hustle and bustle of administrative offices, court complexes, commercial buildings, churches and people from the south who frequent its streets with the air of the Elysée of architecture, Galle! We then continue to Yala via Weligama. Watch closely as the "fishermen on stilts" outdo each other in their patience in this photographers' paradise, as they dip their toes in the gentle waves that caress the golden shores, an experience that never goes out of fashion under the bright sun! Continue to Yala. Check in at your hotel. Dinner and hotel accommodation in Yala / Kataragama.
Day 3
Yala / Ella / Nuwara Eliya
Early in the morning, enjoy a safari in Yala National Park. Covering 1259 square kilometers, Yala National Park is the heart of Sri Lanka's wildlife. When your jeep drives through the giant gates of Yala, you are not only entering the country's most visited national park, but also the lands of a civilization that thrived during the time of Sri Lanka's kings. Yala has a bit of all the island's fauna and flora: elephants, sloth bears, fish, jackals, various birds and the highest density of leopards in the world roam freely through the vast grasslands, bushes, ponds and dunes and, with a bit of luck, you might come across them. Enjoy the Asian safari in your jeep, passing rocks and narrow curves under the tropical sun. After the safari, we'll head for the high, mountainous part of the island. Our first sight will be to admire the beautiful surroundings of the valley we have just left behind. Ella is a small paradise in the highlands of central Sri Lanka. This quiet mountain village with spectacular views, amidst mountains, tea plantations, temples and waterfalls, is the perfect base from which to relax. We continue our journey to Nuwara Eliya. Steep, misty roads, through lush green canopies of tea bushes and in a cool climate, remind visitors that they are in the famous British colonial retreat of Nuwara Eliya. With an English country atmosphere, the City of Light, once ruled by English and Scottish planters, is still full of colonial houses and buildings and one of the best 18-hole golf courses in the world. Dinner and hotel accommodation in Nuwara Eliya.
Day 4
Nuwara Eliya / Kandy
After breakfast, proceed to Kandy On the way, a visit to a tea plantation. Sri Lanka, tea and tourism are words that cannot be separated. Take a stroll through the cool, misty hills that boast a tea tour, covering lush green blankets of its plantations. Or simply step inside a tea factory where the prestigious Ceylon brand of tea is processed to observe a rich tradition that is still alive today. As you listen to the whistle of the machines, inhaling the heavenly aroma emanating from these facilities, be sure to end your day in style with a cup of perfectly blended Ceylon tea. Continue to Kandy. Visit the city of Kandy, see its temple, lake and, in the evening, watch a cultural show of traditional Sinhalese dances. The locals refer to Kandy as "Maha Nuwara", the great city, and in the time of the kings it was known as "Senkadagala". Kandy was the last capital of the Sinhalese kings and fell to the British conquerors in 1815. Located in the central hills, about 112 km from Colombo, Kandy is a must-see for all visitors. With a beautiful lake in the middle, a World Heritage Site for the Temple of the Tooth, Kandy is a city full of life. The temple houses a tooth, the most sacred relic of Buddha in Sri Lanka, which, according to legend, was brought back in 312 AD by a royal couple from India. Every August, Kandy hosts the "Esala Perahera", the island's biggest religious and cultural spectacle, a fascinating festival of dancers, drums and elephants that lasts eight days before the full moon. Dinner and hotel accommodation in Kandy.
Day 5
Kandy / Habarana / Minneriya / Habarana
After breakfast, we head to Habarana. On the way, we will visit a spice garden in Matale. Matale is an agricultural area in the Central Province that is rarely off the map due to its remarkable contribution through the island's signature crops, which range from tea, rubber and vegetables to spices. Leading the rebellion of 1848, Matale is today proud of its history woven around spices. Visit a spice garden and observe its therapeutic values and processes over a refreshing cup of herbal tea. Or spend some time in the Hindu-influenced streets for a true urban adventure full of voices and colors. Continue to Habarana. This small town is not a destination in itself, but it is centrally located for visiting the surrounding areas, such as Sigiriya, Polonnaruwa and safaris to Minneriya and Kaudulla National Parks. In the afternoon, head to Minneriya for an exciting jeep safari in Minneriya National Park. Minneriya is an elephant sanctuary set in more than 8,800 hectares where you can always see herds of swaying trunks and wagging ears of different sizes. In addition, Minneriya is home to herds of deer and a large number of birds. The jeep parks on the edge of the water reservoir and turns off the engine to watch the herds of elephants that, one by one, head towards the grassy banks to feed on the tender shoots. In fact, this is the largest concentration of elephants in the world, more than 700 at any one time, which has made the park a hotspot for wildlife enthusiasts from all over the world. Dinner and hotel accommodation in Habarana or Sigiriya.
Day 6
Habarana / Sigiriya / Polonnaruwa / Habarana
After breakfast, visit the rock fortress of Sigiriya. The rocky citadel of King Lasagna dates back to the 5th century and is a World Heritage Site. Sigiriya not only impresses with the supremacy of Sri Lanka's ancient engineering and urban planning, but is also one of the most beautiful monuments of art and culture. Enter the gigantic "lion's paws", which dominate the symmetrical royal gardens below, to understand the splendor that once dominated this rocky fortress. Surrounded by walls and moats, Lion Rock, which resembles the mythological "City of the Gods", is covered in frescoes that relate to the Gupta-style paintings found in the Ajanta caves in India. Walk in the shadow of the eminent 'wall of mirrors' that embraces the western face of Sigiriya, which represents an artistic laminate a hundred meters long. Then visit the ancient city of Polonnaruwa. After the decline of Anuradhapura, Sri Lanka's first capital, the city of Polonnaruwa was born, a medieval capital and jewel in the crown of King Parakramabahu I, which remains a beautiful heritage of architecture, engineering and religious belief. Walk along the sprawling walls of this World Heritage Site, blessed with stupas, resting Buddha statues, irrigation canals and fantastically carved Hindu sculptures, while you see the house of relics, Watadage, which boasts beautiful stone carvings. Take a look around and you'll see a subtle Hindu influence in Polonnaruwa's architecture and statues. One of its greatest attractions is to sit by the Galviharaya and observe the absolute beauty that flows from every curve of its four huge Buddhist statues carved from a single, immense stone. The aesthetics of this mighty kingdom lie next to the "Parakrama Samudraya", the sea of Parakramabahu, and is its main irrigation legacy. At the end of the visit, we will return to the hotel Dinner and hotel accommodation in Habarana or Sigiriya.
Day 7
Habarana / Dambulla / Airport OR beach stay
After breakfast, a visit to the cave temples of Dambulla. Dambulla has been appreciated by many kings since the 1st century BC and is now an icon of the island. The Rock Temple or Golden Temples of Dambulla is a complex of 5 caves with well-preserved cave paintings illustrating the life of Buddha along its walls. It also houses 150 Buddha statues, some of which are covered in gold. These caves are located in a land that is today an important economic and cultural crossroads in the country, as it is the country's agricultural supply center. Then transfer to Colombo International Airport for your departure flight. Or Continue to Negombo, Trincomalee or Pasikudah for a stay on the beach.
